Silverado Resort and Spa North, Napa, CA
The first Tour event of the 2021/2022 wraparound season begins tomorrow in Napa. There is not a great deal of information about the golf course itself except that is tree-lined and was re-designed by Johnny Miller who appears to hold an ownership position. The players who have won here over the past several years do not seem to share any particular style of play.
After reviewing the field, past performance on this course and how their games are trending, here is who I believe will contend this week:
Who should win? – Jon Rahm
Rahm is clearly the class of the field this week. If he is truly interested in winning and not just tuning up his game for the Ryder Cup, he should win easily.
Who will win? – Kevin Na
Na has been one of the hottest golfers on Tour. His results over the past five tournaments have been: T23, T2, T8, T17,and 3. Based on these results and his general grittiness, it’s hard to believe he was not one of Steve Stricker’s six captain selections. This could have been Na’s best chance to represent his country in the Ryder Cup. I believe Na will have a bit of “I’ll show you” in him this week. At 22/1 to win outright, I would be putting down a few quid.
Others to consider? – Cameron Champ 45/1, Harold Varner 45/1
Champ won here in 2020, but has not played well since he won four starts ago. Varner has played well on this course and he has three top-15’s in his past five tournaments.
An interesting top-5 selection? – Adam Hadwin
Hadwin finished second to Champ in 2020 and has a bit of a roller coaster trend going on right now. He has finished MC, T6, MC, T10, MC, over his last five tournaments. If this trend continues, he could be in line for a top finish this week. His odds are: 75/1 to win; 14/1 top-5, 7/1 top-10.
