Viktor Hovland won impressively in Mexico this past weekend. He went off at 20/1 odds and – in hindsight – would have been a good pick to win even though defending a championship is not all that common on the Tour. Hovland was in my “could win” category along with Abraham Ancer (T7) and Patrick Reed (T56).
The player I thought “should win” was Justin Thomas (3) and he was in the hunt but would have needed a final-round 64 to tie Hovland. Aaron Wise was my pick to win and he started well but finished in T15 position and 10 strokes behind the winner. I ended up putting my money on my longshot pick (Matthew Wolff) based on his long 55/1 odds. I thought I had a winner early when he was on fire for the first 27 holes of the tournament but he cooled off considerably on Saturday but was still able to post a T5 finish.
