Farmers Insurance Open

San Diego, CA

I was caught off guard with the Wednesday start this week. I have no excuse as I am currently residing in the San Diego area. Because of this, my analysis will be more succinct.

The field is a strong one with six of the top ten and twelve of the top twenty in the OWGR competing at Torrey Pines. Based on current ranking, odds to win and past results in this event, the studs would appear to be Jon Rahm, Hideki Matsuyama, Xander Schauffele and Tony Finau. I am not discounting the presence of Justin Thomas, Bryson DeChambeau and Jordan Spieth but those players have either not competed on this track lately or well.

Who should win? – Jon Rahm (6/1)

This seems to be my go-to lately but it’s hard not to identify Rahm as the player to beat on a tougher golf course where he has had a lot of top finishes.

Longer shots to consider – Francesco Molinari (100/1), Will Zalatoris (40/1)

I have been waiting Molinari to find his game again and he looked like he was ready last week. Zalatoris may also break through this week on a course where -10 will be a good score.

Who will win? – Tony Finau (25/1)

This course suits Finau’s game and he has contended here in the past. This could be the week of his third career win – and we all know he should have many more.

  1. You can blame the NFL for the early start of this year. This tournament has always been scheduled for the open weekend before the Super Bowl, but football added an extra week this season, so the “gap week” is pushed back a week. Here’s to an exciting Saturday finish!
