Cadence Bank Houston Open

Memorial Park Golf Course, Houston TX

Scottie Scheffler headlines a weaker field this week in Houston with only three other competitors in the top 20 of the world ranking. Scheffler had a runner-up finish at this event last year just before he got things going following his win in Phoenix.

Who should win? – Scottie Scheffler (of course) 5.5/1

He’s the number two-ranked player in the world who is also coming off a T2 at the Mayakoba after a final round 62.

Who could win? – Sam Burns 12/1, Hideki Matsuyama 22/1, Maverick McNealy 25/1

If everyone plays to their abilities, this could be another Scheffler/Burns shoot-out. The two best buddies could easily distance themselves in this field. Matsuyama has been playing only so-so this season but the former Masters’ champ could break out at any time. McNealy has been put quietly putting up some strong finishes this season with two T10s, a T12, and T18 in his last four events. He is likely to win his first tournament this season and only has to outplay a handful of the big boys in Houston.

Longer shots to consider – Matthew NeSmith 45/1

NeSmith had a strong season last year and has continued to post low finishes in the early going. After a MC at Fortinet, he has posted T9, T2, and T9 in his last three tournaments.

Who will win? – Scottie Scheffler

If Scheffler plays reasonably well and no one has a “Russell Henley” type of week, he should prevail.
