Country Club of Jackson, MS.
It will be a medium-strength field this week at the Sanderson Farms Championship. Sergio Garcia – the defending champ – is the only Ryder Cup team member participating this week. He normally plays well after the Ryder Cup but not when there is this short turnaround. He is doing his duty this week but will likely be too emotionally drained to put up a strong defense.
There are five players you would expect to contend for the win this week. In order of best odds to win: Sam Burns (18/1), Garcia (20/1), Will Zalatoris (20/1); Sungjae Im (22/1), Corey Conners (22/1).
Who should win? – Sam Burns.
Burns has won and contended against strong fields. He hits it long and straight and should be filled with confidence after his breakout season.
Who could win? – Im, Conners, Zalatoris, Mito Pereira
Im is a proven winner and will want to come out of the gate strongly after a mediocre season. Conners will likely Top-10 this week but could win with a hot putter. Ditto for Zalatoris. Pereira is coming in after several strong finishes and a win would pay out well given his 33/1 odds.
Who will win? – Sam Burns
He is the favourite to win and sometimes that actually happens.
Longshot to consider – Jimmy Walker
The sweet-swinging former PGA champ has to win again sometime, doesn’t he? His last start was encouraging with a T11 at the 3M. He hasn’t done much else recently but at 200/1 odds he’s worth laying down a small bet. He could pull a Lucas Glover, and come out of nowhere with low expectations.
