The Summit Club, Las Vegas, NV
A lot of the big names are back on Tour this week for the second Las Vegas-based event. The CJ Cup is being played at the Fazio-designed Summit Club for the first time. Most of the world top-20 golfers are here with only Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, and Patrick Cantlay as notable exceptions.
Who should win? – Collin Morikawa 14/1
His recent results – not including his strong play in the Ryder Cup – have not been stellar, but he was reportedly dealing with a sore back during the FedEx Cup playoffs. He is still one of the best iron players on Tour and always contends in big events when healthy. He is also a member at the Summit Club, which should give him a leg up on local knowledge.
Who could win? – Justin Thomas 16/1, Xander Schauffele 14/1, Viktor Hovland 16/1
JT is a two-time winner at this event and many of his career wins have been at this time of the year. Schauffele may be a bit rusty but has an all-around game that suits this course. Hovland had only a T44 last week as his short game was a bit suspect.
Longshot to consider – Talor Gooch 60/1
Gooch is trending well and would not be surprising to see him win this season. He is also 10/1 to place in the top-5.
Who will win? – Rory McIlroy 18/1
This is more a hunch than anything else but Rory does seem to win Tour events when you least expect it. After his weak performance at the Ryder Cup and his emotional response, I expect Rory went to work getting ready for his debut event of the 21/22 season.
